He drowned in 1844 just off the coast of Timaru, approximately 5km south of the township- and this location now bears his name.
The Lighthouse that stands at Tūhawaiki Point was built in 1903 by the Timaru Harbour Board. Tūhawaiki Point is now part of a popular coastal walkway.
