Description
Collection summaryLocal photo magazines portraying social events around South Canterbury.DescriptionThese local photo magazines portray social events around South Canterbury- everything from sports events and weddings, to school balls, coming of age parties, galas, concerts and agricultural shows- providing fascinating insights into life in South Canterbury.
The PHOTO NEWS: SOUTH CANTERBURY'S PHOTOGRAPHIC NEWSPAPER was produced by Ron Bishop and was published from November 1983 until May 1984. The Aoraki Collection has a complete set.
The SOUTH CANTERBURY PHOTO MAGAZINE was a monthly magazine printed and published by Copy Services (Canterbury) Limited, and edited by Noeline McCaughan.
The SOUTH CANTERBURY WOMEN'S PICTORIAL MAGAZINE aimed to be a permanent record of important events in the lives of local women. The belief was that the events covered were not only important to the lives of the participants but were also of wider interest to the community.
The MID & SOUTH CANTERBURY FOTO NEWS (initially the SOUTH CANTERBURY FOTO NEWS) was a monthly news pictorial magazine, published on every fourth Thursday, beginning in May 1962. Each volume series was confined to a separate year. It featured numerous photographs of local scenes, sporting, social and on the spot events.
The PHOTO REVIEW was first published in April 1964 and incorporated the Mid & South Canterbury Foto news. Initially published monthly it switched to quarterly after the September 1966 issue (Vol.3, no.6). The final Mid and South Canterbury only issue was Vol.3 No.7. From March 1967 coverage included all of 'southern New Zealand', so presumably smaller regions were incorporated into one publication. From this issue the magazines were numbered from volume 6, possibly a continuation of the numbering of the larger regions.
The final issue was Vol.6, no.4 (June 1967).
The Aoraki Collection has a complete set of the PHOTO REVIEW and are in the process of digitising them.
If you are aware of editions we are missing of these magazines we would love to hear from you.
