The current record is 625.79 square metres. To beat this record, Timaru District Libraries is attempting to make a 700 square metre, or larger, blanket fort.
A target of 70,000 peggy squares was set. By February 2022, community knitters had handed in 83,657 peggy squares, and the job of sewing them all into blankets began.
Adele Hewlett, Timaru District Library Manager said: "The success of this project in 2021 has been the overwhelming support of our communities.”
