DescriptionIn 1941 the Soil Conservation and Rivers Control Act was passed and later the Soil Conservation and Rivers Control Council was set up. The first catchment boards, including the South Canterbury Board, were constituted in 1944.
The Board served South Canterbury for forty five years before the Local Government Amendment Act of 1989 established regional councils, who inherited their responsibilities. The South Canterbury Catchment Board then came under the Canterbury Regional Council, now known as 'Environment Canterbury' or ECAN.
The Aoraki Heritage Collection holds many publications and reports from the South Canterbury Catchment Board including 'Challenge and change : a history of the South Canterbury Catchment Board & Regional Water Board, 1944-89' by C L McConnell.
