He set up and ran Opuha Nurseries near Geraldine with John Talbot, specialising in native plants for revegetation projects. He has a long involvement with the South Canterbury branch of the Royal New Zealand Forest and Bird Society, and along with partner Ines Stäger, was involved with the establishment of the Kiwi Conservation Club.
