Alternative NameThe Hunter HillsDescriptionThe Hunters Hills separate the coastal downlands of South Canterbury from the Hakataramea and Upper Waihao valleys. Te Tari-a-Te-Kaumira, translates as 'The Long Range of Te Kaumira'. Te Kaumira was leading a travelling group from Hakataramea Valley to Pureora when they encountered a blizzard, during which Te Kaumira went missing. His body was discovered underneath a rock shelter and the hills were named in his memory.
The European name 'Hunters Hills' originates from when Te Huruhuru, a Ngāi Tahu leader, explained to Surveyor Charles Torlesse that the area was an important hunting ground.
