DescriptionThe Canterbury and Otago Association, which by amalgamation became the New Zealand and Australian Land Company, started buying stations in Canterbury in May 1864 when the Hon Mathew Holmes bought the Pareora and Acton estates, and the Levels before the end of the year. Through the work of its servants, this Company played a prominent part in the development of sheep farming in New Zealand and pioneered the way in the frozen meat industry.

Includes personal account of authors early life and working life.
