The Great Fire of 1868

DescriptionOn the 7th of December 1868 a fire that started in a cabinet-maker's workshop destroyed 39 wooden buildings in the inner city area. The aftermath of the fire changed the face of the town as brick and stone buildings were constructed to replace the destroyed wooden ones.

The fire stretched from the cabinet makers workshop (now Hallensteins) south to the site of Warehouse Stationery, opposite the Theatre Royal.
