Alternative NamePureoraSummarySmall town south of Timaru.DescriptionPareora is a small town approximately 14km south of Timaru, in South Canterbury, New Zealand. It is named after the Pareora River, the original name of which was Pureora, Pureora having been a passenger on the Ārai-te-uru waka.
The township was established around the freezing works which opened in 1904 and is still in operation today.
The Aoraki Heritage Collection holds several books relating to the history of the town and the school. The school was originally Pareora East but eventually became part of Timaru South School. Please contact us for more information.
