Alternative NameAoraki PolytechnicAra InstituteAraDescriptionThe origins of the polytechnic go back to 1901 when the Timaru Technical School was founded as a co-educational evening school, operating in a building loaned from Timaru Main School.
In 1909 new purpose-built buildings on Arthur Street were opened, and in 1934 the school became Timaru Technical High School.
By the mid 1960’s the school had over 600 students working towards School Certificate and University Entrance.
Under the 1964 Education Act, technical high schools officially became secondary schools, hence the school was renamed Timaru College in 1967. Apprentice training was still held in the evening using the school’s facilities, but was now regarded as post-secondary education. Over 1983/1984 the secondary school was moved to a new campus on Pages Road and became Mountainview High School.
The post-secondary technical section of the college remained at Arthur Street and became Aoraki Polytechnic in 1987.

In 2016 Aoraki Polytechnic and Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology (CPIT) merged and became known as Ara Institute with six campuses across the South Island.External LinkAra: Our storyGeolocation^[1]SubjectSchools and Education
