The 'New Pages Road School': Timaru College to Mountainview High School

Description

Alternative NameMoving of Timaru CollegeConstruction of Mountainview High SchoolDescriptionTimaru's only co-educational state school, Mountainview High School, was officially opened on Pages Road in 1984. However, Mountainview evolved from the evening school, Timaru Technical School, founded in 1901, which in turn became Timaru Technical High School in 1934. In 1967 the school was renamed again as Timaru College.

The new 'Pages Road school' was constructed as the site for Timaru Colleges' secondary section. The post-secondary technical section of the college remained at Arthur Street.

The renaming of Timaru College and the establishment of the school on a new site was a protracted and often controversial affair. Land for a new school was purchased on Pages Road in 1955. Work was finally due to start in 1976 but was delayed, and they did not start to clear the site until November 1978.

There were many controversies over the years, arguments over cost and the timing were often very political. More locally focused controversies included a proposal for a new town dump near the school, and whether the school should remain as Timaru College or have a new name.

The newspaper clippings and ephemera below provide an insight to the enormity of the project. The majority of these clippings are from scrapbooks collected at the time by Timaru College.
