The yarn of an early settler

Description

DescriptionJohn Rainbow Stansell (1843-1921) wrote "this account of his experience as an early settler in South Canterbury" in 1919.

John Stansells recollections start in 1851, while still in England. He came to New Zealand with his parents in 1858. The following year Stansell was carting goods between Timaru and Christchurch. He then spent five years shearing on South Canterbury Stations. After marrying he leased the Burkes Pass accommodation house for five years before moving to Timaru to live. While in Timaru he was involved in numerous business ventures including running the Criterion Hotel and leasing the Theatre Royal and Mechanics Institute. He also served on the Timaru Borough Council. He later moved to the North Island, eventually becoming Mayor of Foxton.
