He became a prominent local businessman and served as mayor from 1870-1875. He died in scandalous circumstances in 1886 after he was poisoned by his son in law Thomas Hall.

Captain Cain is memorialised in a life sized statue in the courtyard at the north end of the old landing service building on George Street.
