He trained as a lawyer in London but then immigrated to New Zealand in 1855 with his friend and colleague (and later brother-in-law) JBA Acland. Together they established Mt Peel Station, amongst the first to take up sheep farming in the Canterbury high country. In 1866 he took over Orari Gorge Station.
